New Mexico State Supreme Court Blocks Straight Party Ballots

On Wednesday, in an unanimous decision, the New Mexico Supreme Court made it clear that only the Legislature can restore straight-party voting, which allows voters to vote for a major party’s entire slate of candidates by filling in an oval at the top of the ballot, firmly repudiating Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver’s (D) claim that she could unilaterally institute a straight-party vote ballot for the November 6 election.
